Kei trucks for the ranches, orchards and mountains of Colorado's Western Slope

Colorado's Western Slope runs from the orchards of the Grand Valley and the North Fork to the San Juans. Its eight counties held 7,899 farms and 2,508 cattle operations in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, 5,500 acres of orchards and vineyards and 21 operating ski areas. Colorado has passed a road law for kei trucks that is not yet in force, and a newer governed truck takes an off highway vehicle title or registration.

Questions

Asked about the Western Slope.

Can I drive a kei truck on the road on the Western Slope?

Colorado made kei vehicles a legal road class in 2025 and title and registration open on 1 January 2028. The Colorado page gives the full rule.

What work suits a kei truck on the Western Slope?

Ranch rounds, orchard rows, mountain property and snow, where a typical county gets 48 inches a year. Colorado asks no OHV registration for a vehicle used strictly on private property or strictly for agriculture.

What about a newer truck governed to 25 mph?

It enters the country as off road equipment, governed to 25 mph. In Colorado it works public land and trails open to off-highway vehicles, roads a state agency designates open, local OHV routes a city or county opens by ordinance (never part of the state highway system), crossings, agricultural use and private land. The Colorado page has the rest of the rule.
