Testing

For a newer kei truck that would come in as nonroad equipment, the engine needs an EPA certificate before it is imported. Testing works out which EPA rules an exact engine falls under and what that certificate would take.

A road truck 25 years or older needs none of this. It comes in on age.

How it works

The method

Four steps, one engine at a time.

01

Identify the engine

The exact engine, its controls and what the truck is for. Displacement alone does not decide the category. Power does.

02

Find the category

EPA sorts a nonroad engine by maximum power. An engine of 1,000 cc or less and 30 kW or less may certify to the small engine standards, which is where every kei engine certified for mini trucks sits, between 14.46 and 29.9 kW.

03

Scope the work

The standards that apply, the test program and the evidence an outside laboratory would produce for whoever will hold the certificate.

04

Keep the record

Every configuration, every change and every result kept with the engine it belongs to, ready for the holder of the certificate.

Today

What Testing is, plainly.

We do not run emissions tests ourselves and hold no accreditation. EPA takes certification data from the laboratory a certificate holder uses, and the certificate is held by the importer or the manufacturer, not by a laboratory.

So the work today is the brief. The engine identified, its category found and the test scope written for whoever will hold the certificate. Testing is not the same as receiving an EPA certificate, clearing customs or qualifying a truck for the road, and an inquiry promises none of those.

The road truck lane

Most buyers never need it.

A road truck 25 years or older enters on age, under the federal 25 year rule and EPA's provision for vehicles at least 21 years old in their original configuration.
